National Critics Institute Faculty Fellowship

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival is sponsoring a new two-week fellowship for faculty critics to attend the Eugene O Neill Institute this summer during the O'Neill National Playwrights Conference. The tentative dates for the 2002 retreat are the first two weeks of July: Sunday, June 30 th through Saturday, July 15 th . At the Institute, the KCACTF Faculty Fellow will participate actively in what has been described as a boot camp for critics, writing as many as three reviews a day, and participating in round table critiques and discussions about writing and theatre criticism.

 

If you feel you are interested and qualified for this professional development opportunity, please submit a letter that details

•  your experience writing for academic and/or professional publications

•  your experience teaching criticism in specific classrooms

•  your experience which illustrates your recent support of and commitment to the educational goals of KCACTF

 

Along with the letter, please briefly address the following questions:

•  What are your strengths as a writer and a critic?

•  What skills do you need to work on?

•  What are your strengths as a teacher?

•  How would two weeks at the O'Neill benefit you as a teaching artist?

 

Selection for the Fellowship will be based on a demonstration in the materials submitted of the following criteria:

•  your current achievements and experience as a critic

•  your commitment to teaching, especially dramatic criticism

•  your work to successfully balance teaching with professional criticism

•  your record of support and commitment to furthering the educational goals of KCACTF

And, finally, please include your curriculum vita along with the letter and brief answers to the above questions, and two writing samples (ideally from journals or newspapers that have published your work). Please submit these materials to Dr. Mark Charney, NCI Coordinator, by March 15 th , 2002 at the Department of English, Strode Tower , Clemson University , Clemson , S.C. 29634-0523 . Submissions will be reviewed by a panel consisting of KCACTF Executive Committee members and a member of the professional theatre community. Dan Sullivan, Director of the O'Neill National Critics Institute and formerly Chief Critic of the Los Angeles Times , will make the final selection.
