General Information

Mehron / Make-up Designory Makeup Design Award

 

Mehron Inc., located in New York, specializes in the manufacture of performance makeup for professionals.  Make-up Designory, located in California, is the leading school for makeup education in America.  The purpose of the Mehron/Make-up Designory award is to give outstanding student designers national recognition and the opportunity to display their work at the Kennedy Center during the national festival.  Designs are appraised on the basis of quality, effectiveness, originality and rendering techniques.  Colleges and Universities that have one or more student designers involved in the makeup design for a participating or associate production are eligible for the award.  Colleges and Universities entering the Kennedy Center competition must provide the regional directors with the name of the students participating.  Detailed information about the award will be mailed to each participating school.  Mehron/Make-up Designory regional winners will receive $100 worth of Mehron makeup.  Representatives from Mehron Inc. and Make-up Designory will select the national award winner from the regional finalists during the national festival in Washington, DC.  The national winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to either New York City or Los Angeles.  The New York City trip will consist of a tour of the Mehron Inc. factory, a tour of New York City and a Broadway show. The Los Angeles destination will allow the student to be a guest of Mehron Inc. at the International Makeup Artist show in June and a tour of the sites and one of the many movie studios in Hollywood.  The winner will also receive a scholarship from Make-up Designory to complete a choice of study along with a professional makeup case, provided by Mehron Inc., filled with the necessary supplies for their program at Make-up Designory.

 

General Information on the Mehron /Make-up Designory Award

 

1.   Designs entered in the Mehron / Make-up Designory for Theatrical Design Excellence may be selected for the regional festival regardless of whether or not the production is selected for the regional festivalStudent designers will be notified of the selection of the designs for the regional exhibition according to the procedures of the region by the Regional Design Chair.

 

2.  The designer is responsible for developing a suitable method of shipping the design both to and from the regional and national festival, including appropriate mailing and insurance charges.

 

3.  Design judges will give an open critique session of the exhibit at the regional festival for student designers whose work is on display and for festival participants.  The guest artist will select, or serve as chairman of a panel of designers who will select for exhibition at the Kennedy Center.  Announcements of the design selected for exhibition at the Kennedy Center will be made at the regional festival.

 

4.  Regional design winners will have their transportation costs provided by KCACTF to attend the National Design Critique at the Kennedy Center.  Attendance at the National Design Critique is not mandatory.  For those designers able to attend, KCACTF will provide hotel accommodations and per diem for the two-day period of design adjudication.  Faculty representatives will be allowed to observe the national design critique on a space available basis.  The design award will be based solely on the submitted design documentation relative to the entered participating or associate production.  Therefore students are encouraged to bring their portfolio to the Kennedy Center.  The portfolio materials shall not be presented to or discussed with the adjudicators until after the winning designs have been chosen.

 

5.  A national winner in Makeup Design will be selected by the national design adjudicator who will include a member from the Mehron Company and Makeup Designory.  The winner will receive a professional makeup case and supplies and an all expense paid trip to New York City, for a guided tour of New York City and the Mehron Factory, tickets to a Broadway Play or a trip to Los Angeles to be a guest to the National Makeup Artist Convention and tour through a Hollywood Movie Studio.  The winner will also receive scholarship to the Make-up Designory School in Los Angeles California.

 

 

Regulations and Procedures:

 

1.      Only schools with one or more student designers in participating or associate productions are eligible for the Mehron / Make-up Designory Award for Theatrical Design Excellence.  Entering schools will, at the time of registration with the Kennedy Center and Regional Chair, inform the Regional Chair of any student designers.

 

2.      Only bona fide students are eligible for this award.  For the purposes of this award a bona fide student is one who, during the period of initial screening, is: an undergraduate student registered for at least six semester hours or nine quarter hours; a graduate student registered to at least three semester or four quarter hours; a continuing part time student enrolled in a regular degree or certificate program.

 

3.      All design material must be labeled with Title of Production, Designer’s name and institution.  The designer’s return address should be on the back of each item of the entry.  The complete design presentation, when mounted and displayed on a vertical surface should not exceed approximately 25 square feet.

 

4.      After the initial screening, the student designer will send the design materials requested including representative color production photos (at least two), to the host of the Regional Festival two weeks prior to the festival or bring materials to the design exhibit space in person prior to the scheduled time for display at the Regional Festival (unless the Regional Festival host request a different timetable.)

 

5.      Student designers will submit the appropriate design materials to the judge(s) at the screening visit.  Following is a list of requested materials.

 

  1. Photographs of the actors pre-makeup.  A headshot would suffice.

 

  1. One to two representative renderings of each character, with the colors listed for each are i.e., base, cheeks, eye shadow, lips, hair color. Etc.  (Makeup character worksheets may be used for renderings.)

 

  1. Color photographs of the finished character, at least one head shot, and at least one waist shot to show coordination between costume, makeup and hair.

 

  1. A one-page statement of the design approach to the production should be included separately from the renderings and color scheme.
