Guidelines for Design Respondents
KCACTF Designs
These are realized productions that
are either ACTF participating or ACTF associate
productions, and show evidence of more mature design
work.
Concise and clear verbal
articulation in the design statement (including
the director's approach to this
production). Mention the stage space and
audience relationship (e.g.: intimate
space; proscenium)
Design visually articulates
the director's production approach.
Sophisticated use of design
principles.
Format / layout / presentation
choices are well-considered, and relate to the
design intent.
Command of technical skills in
visually communicating the design intent
(e.g. - costume rendering, drafting, perspective
rendering, model building, etc.)
Evidence of appropriate
annotated research - well organized and thorough
(research collage boards, research notebooks,
etc.).
Evidence of appropriate
inspiration for color / texture choices - well
organized and thorough. Include paint
ships, fabric swatches and gel swatches (not just
the gel #'s).
Area-specific organizational
tools (scene breakdown charts, action charts,
costume plots, magic sheets, instrument
schedules, cue sheets, etc.).
Area-specific design
communication tools (color chart, preliminary
sketches, fabric swatches, painter's elevations,
ground plan, section drawing, elevation drawings,
light plot, etc.). Drafting should
correspond to USITT standards symbols and
numbering systems.
Production photographs.
For lighting designers, make sure you include one
overall stage shot for context, along with closer
or more specific shots. Also, make sure
your photo order in the display corresponds with
the progression of "looks" through the
show. For makeup designers, include photos
of the actors' faces without makeup, and the
actors in finished makeup (including hairstyles).
Reference everything in your
presentation to the design intention.
Everything you display should clearly connect
back to the design statement.
Your design presentation
should take us on your journey as a designer with
this production.
