Goal:
One goal of the event is to provide the playwright with an
opportunity to learn about their craft by experiencing their
literature using skilled directors who have demonstrated success
and interest in working with new plays.
Directors:
The director may be a
student, faculty or professional, as determined by regional
leadership which shall include regional NPP leadership.
Format:
All
readings will be informed by AEA guidelines for the
presentation of new play readings.
Process:
Regions are
strongly encouraged to bring an outside director who has
demonstrated success in directing readings who will workshop ALL
OF THE DIRECTORS in the process of preparing a scene for a
reading presentation. The event should be considered a
workshop, so directors and playwrights have an opportunity to
learn how a reading works. NPP is strongly encouraged to
bring in assistant student directors who are interested in
learning about the process so they might observe and participate
in the process with the assigned directors. These assistant
directors might then be eligible to be selected as a ten minute
play director the following year.
National NPP
Directors:
Chosen by the National Selection Team (NST.) The NST will
recommend to Gregg Henry, National Artistic Director, a list of
potential
directors for original work at the Kennedy Center. That
list of directors could come from any number of
events/productions that the NST attends at the regional festival.
Each region is not guaranteed a new play director.
